These are unusual stories that capture the feel of England, Wales and Ireland with language and beautiful artwork that incorporates elements of the story in the details of the wood cut. I highly recommend the book to those looking to share their Celtic heritage with their children (or grandparents!).Update: My 8 year old twin nieces and I have almost finished every tale and we all love them. While I need to occasionally translate a few of the Celtic words for them, the unusual words add an air of mystery and authenticness to the tales. But what I love about the stories is that they are UNPREDICTABLE! and when you think that the author is about to tie the tale up with a traditional "happy ever after" ending, there's often a surprising twist. My brother has started reading the companion Ghostly Tales to them and I hear that they cannot put it down at bedtime!
This collection of stories is amazingly put together and the illustrations at the beginning of each story were beautiful. love reading mythology, so for me this was a great find. Especially as most of these tales were not ones that I had read before.The book itself will stand out on your shelf as its is very prettily bound. I will for sure be keeping this as I know I'll want to revisit these stories again and again.
I love reading stories from other cultures, especially childrens tales as I feel they give a good picture of how that culture has formed and developed their beliefs over time. These stories seem to capture this more so than other collections have; in addition, there are many unique stories as well. The variety of tales, the descriptions and vividness of them all capture the readers attention. The pictures included just added to the stories.
I wasn't familiar with these stories. They make good bed time reading with the kids. But beware, like many fairy tales, awful things happen, such as maidens being eaten by monsters.There are nice illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.
Wonderful old fairy tales. Some of which I had never heard that connect present landmarks to the story. Fairly adult reading.
I very much enjoyed reading this collection of fairy tales from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. They are not the same stories that are read everyday.
I did not read the book personally, but bought it for a 10 year old relative, who has a great interest in Celtic stories. She read through it in a few days, and loved every minute of it.
