I don't like this book. The author makes databases, a relatively simple thing as confusing and difficult as possible. The first workbench is broken and frustrating to use. If I had gotten the book form I would've asked for a refund.updated 9/16/2015okay after reading a bit more the book is OK, but the workbenches are haphazardly done. Workbench 2 assumes you've already put in a table but you haven't put in the second table. What a mess. Author should proofread with a test group before pushing to market.
I my opinion the information is presented in an annoying way. The subject matter and examples do not present a clear picture. I think better examples are needed and the author should find a way to liven up the material. It is excruciatingly boring to read. I understand the subject matter is dry but that is when the skill of the author should shine thru to liven up the material.
I decided to go back and get a degree and dreaded taking classes around subject matters I have done for years. So I thought this book would be a bore. However it is teaching me things in Chapters 1 and 2. I have not had formal training on database design or development, so there was terminology that I have heard but this gave me the technical understanding. For someone that has never developed or designed a database will get a lot out of the book. I like how it gives examples in SQL Server, Oracle, and My SQL and not just Access. The book explains everything very clearly and I do recommend it for the classroom.
I had to get this book for class, and it wasn't my first choice. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the writing style and depth of information. However, the font is too small and the screenshots are especially too small. That makes it unnecessarily hard to read, and also makes concentration on learning the content more difficult. In these days of electronic books with adjustable font size, not having that option is unacceptable. Even having a PDF of the pages that was not searchable would be an improvement. However, the ideal platform would be that of a Kindle.
I enjoyed studying from this book as part of my course. The content is written lucidly and was supplemented by notes from my professor. The examples were well demonstrated diagramatically and theoretically, which is important for a subject like this. I would refer this book again, if I needed help with Database concepts going ahead.
So far, this book is pretty good. It reads well for a text book. Concepts do make sense and the examples and illustrations help out. I am only in the first couple chapters so far.
Not very fond of the work bench instructions at the end of each chapter. The example database pictures are scattered all over, and the instructions can become quite confusing when a simple tasks is explained very lengthily.
Only bothered to get it because it was required for a class. Textbooks are evil. If you really want to learn something, just look it up online.
