A story of faith and fraud in post-Civil War America, told through the lens of a photographer who claimed he could capture images of the dead
In the early days of photography, in the death-strewn wake of the Civil War, one man seized America's imagination. A "spirit photographer", William Mumler took portrait photographs that featured the ghostly presence of a lost loved one alongside the living subject. Mumler was a sensation: The affluent and influential came calling, including Mary Todd Lincoln, who arrived at his studio in disguise amid rumors of seances in the White House.
Peter Manseau brilliantly captures a nation wracked with grief and hungry for proof of the existence of ghosts and for contact with their dead husbands and sons. It took a circus-like trial of Mumler on fraud charges, starring P. T. Barnum for the prosecution, to expose a fault line of doubt and manipulation. And even then the judge sided with the defense - nobody ever solved the mystery of his spirit photography.
This forgotten puzzle offers a vivid snapshot of America at a crossroads in its history, a nation in thrall to new technology while clinging desperately to belief.

In the late 1860s, a number of American photographers produced portrait photos that showed not only the expected sitters but vague figures behind them that the photographers, the sitters, or both claimed to be the images of people who had died, often members of the sitters’ families. Interest in these “spirit photographs†was one manifestation of spiritualism, the belief that the dead could communicate with the living and manifest themselves to some degree on the earthly plane—a very popular idea in a nation still grieving from the devastating losses of the Civil War. Just as passionate as spiritualism’s believers were its detractors, who insisted that the idea of manifestations from the dead was preposterous and that spirit photographs, in particular, were a hoax. These viewpoints collided most notably in the trial of William Mumler, perhaps the best known of the spirit photographers, for fraud in New York City in April 1869.Manseau uses Mumler’s career and trial as a focal point for examining not only spirit photography but spiritualism in general and—perhaps most interestingly—early photography in the United States. From it I learned some startling (at least to me) facts, such as that Samuel F. B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph, was also intensely interested in photography, and that many of the famous Civil War photographs attributed to Matthew Brady (a) were not taken by Brady, but rather by his assistant, Alexander Gardner, and (b) were posed after the fact. (“Photoshopping†existed way, way before Photoshop, folks.) The book also contains some very interesting philosophical comments on the basic nature of photography and features that it has in common with spiritualism—whether you believe in “spirit photographs†or not. I recommend this thoughtful book highly both to people interested in the history of spiritualism and related beliefs and those interested in the history of early photography, including its uses, misuses, and deeper meanings.
I LOVED this book. A great read on a very, very interesting subject. The book flowed and was never dry.. I read it quickly and every time I picked the book up, I was transported into another time. It brought to light how much pain many people were in because of the Civil War and the loss of family and how desperately they wanted to communicate with their lost ones, at any cost..If the subject interests you at all, you can't go wrong with this book. Highly recommend.
A masterful portrayal of mid-19th century American invention and tragedy. Perhaps the one could help to ease to pain of the loss of so many in the CW.
I enjoyed learning about the development of photography, spiritualism, and how the Civil War impacted both. There were a few places where the book seemed to get bogged down in unnecessary details.
Well researched
Birthday present was liked !!
It was very interesting. A view of photography that I did not know.
